PM Modi To Inaugurate Navi Mumbai Airport On September 30 With Green Focus

The Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), one of India’s most awaited aviation projects, is set for inauguration on September 30, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi expected to preside over the launch. Officials confirmed that the opening aligns with Navratri, chosen as an auspicious date, after earlier plans were postponed during pitru paksha.

The first phase of NMIA will begin operations on the same day, establishing a second gateway for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The event is also likely to coincide with the inauguration of the Worli–Cuffe Parade stretch of Metro Line 3, underscoring the government’s intent to showcase major transport infrastructure milestones together. Positioned as a next-generation hub, NMIA has been designed to ease congestion at Mumbai’s overburdened airport while setting new benchmarks for sustainability. The facility will operate on 37 megawatts of renewable energy, with its fleet of on-site vehicles powered entirely by electricity or alternative fuels. Officials have emphasised that the airport aims to stand as India’s model of eco-conscious infrastructure, integrating clean energy and carbon-reduction measures from the outset.

A major technological highlight of the project is its ultra-fast baggage handling system. Built with 360-degree barcode scanning, the system is expected to be among the quickest in the world, ensuring reduced waiting times and improved passenger experience. Connectivity has been central to the airport’s design. NMIA will be accessible from all four directions via a network of roads, suburban rail, metro and even water transport. The upcoming Mumbai Trans-Harbour Link (Atal Setu), the city’s coastal road project, and a proposed elevated road to Thane will strengthen links to the facility. Future phases will add a metro corridor and underground access routes, ensuring passengers can reach terminals with walking distances as short as 500 metres.

The airport’s journey has not been without delays. First envisioned decades ago, it was formally launched in 2018 but construction slowed due to the Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent administrative hurdles. Earlier targets of January and June 2025 were eventually revised, with September 30 confirmed as the new deadline following state-level reviews. Beyond infrastructure, cultural representation will also play a part in the airport’s identity. State officials have instructed that installations depicting the legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Maharashtra’s cultural history be placed along the airport’s approach roads, ensuring travellers encounter a blend of heritage and modernity.

The launch of NMIA is expected to transform the regional aviation landscape, decongest Mumbai’s existing airport, and strengthen India’s global connectivity. With sustainability at its core, the project also signals a wider policy shift towards integrating green design in major infrastructure. For the country’s financial capital, it marks both a practical relief and a symbolic step toward building climate-resilient, world-class infrastructure.
