In a major boost to India’s transport infrastructure, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated 103 redeveloped railway stations across 18 states and Union Territories under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS) on Thursday.
The event, conducted virtually, marked a transformative milestone for Indian Railways, aimed at delivering inclusive, accessible, and future-ready mobility solutions rooted in local heritage and sustainability.These stations, spanning 86 districts and developed at a cost of around ₹1,100 crore, are part of a larger vision to enhance the nation’s passenger experience, support regional economies, and reimagine railway infrastructure as modern civic spaces. Each station has been retrofitted with improved passenger facilities, barrier-free access for differently-abled individuals, upgraded platforms, and energy-efficient systems, bringing both functional value and cultural character to the forefront.
The initiative is central to the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, a flagship project of the Ministry of Railways, which aims to upgrade over 1,300 railway stations across the country. Designed to function as multi-modal hubs, these redeveloped facilities are set to bridge the gap between urban and rural transport networks, while integrating sustainability and climate-responsive features such as solar lighting, rainwater harvesting, and green landscaping.
Among the 18 states with upgraded stations, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and Gujarat emerged as key beneficiaries. Maharashtra saw redevelopment in 15 locations including Matunga, Parel, and Deolali — crucial nodes in the state’s dense suburban network. Uttar Pradesh added 18 stations, including Bareilly City and Saharanpur Junction, aimed at easing travel across the state’s industrial and pilgrimage corridors. Gujarat’s 18 redeveloped stations, including Okha, Palitana, and Mithapur, support both trade and tourism, with architecture inspired by the state’s rich heritage.
Tamil Nadu’s upgrades include stations like Srirangam and Tiruvannamalai, preserving temple town identities while offering improved urban-rural rail links. Rajasthan, with eight upgraded stations, witnessed special focus with the Prime Minister physically inaugurating the redeveloped Deshnok station and flagging off a new Bikaner-Mumbai Express. The visit also included the laying of foundation stones for regional infrastructure projects worth ₹26,000 crore, reinforcing the Centre’s push for last-mile development.
What sets the ABSS apart is its conscious effort to blend modern design with cultural narratives. Architectural motifs, local art, and regionally inspired layouts are key features, aimed at creating civic spaces that resonate with community identity. From clean and tech-enabled restrooms to expansive waiting areas and digital signage, the focus remains on enhancing commuter comfort while encouraging modal shift from road to rail — a key step in reducing the nation’s transport carbon footprint.
Each station is equipped with ramps, elevators, tactile flooring, and advanced surveillance systems to ensure inclusivity and safety. Many also include food courts, green areas, and designated spaces for local vendors, thus supporting micro-economies around transit nodes.According to railway officials, another 200 stations are currently in advanced stages of design and planning, with redevelopment tenders expected to be floated later this year. With total investment in the ABSS projected to exceed ₹25,000 crore by 2026, this mission is fast becoming a cornerstone of the government’s “Viksit Bharat” (Developed India) vision.
By revitalising stations as dynamic public assets, the ABSS is not merely addressing infrastructure decay — it is also rewriting the role of railway stations in India’s urban transformation. These stations are no longer mere boarding points but spaces of convergence, accessibility, and identity. As India accelerates toward urban modernity, such people-centric infrastructure can serve as a blueprint for equitable and sustainable development.
