PM Modi Launches Chenab And Anji Rail Bridges

Today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi formally inaugurated two of India’s most iconic infrastructure projects the Chenab and Anji railway bridges ushering in a new era of connectivity for Jammu and Kashmir.

The launch comes as part of a larger developmental push, with projects worth over ₹46,000 crore being unveiled in the region during the Prime Minister’s visit. The spotlight of the event was the Chenab Bridge, which has now earned global recognition as the world’s tallest railway arch bridge, towering 359 metres above the riverbed. The steel arch spans 1,315 metres and has been designed to withstand severe seismic and wind conditions, ensuring long-term resilience in the mountainous terrain. Standing alongside it is the Anji Bridge, India’s first cable-stayed railway bridge, constructed across a deep valley with challenging geological conditions.

These engineering marvels form part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), a 272-km-long mega project aimed at integrating the Kashmir Valley with India’s rail network. Built at a cost of ₹43,780 crore, the USBRL includes 36 tunnels and over 900 bridges, delivering all-weather connectivity to one of the country’s most remote and sensitive regions. With the project’s completion, travel time between Katra and Srinagar has been reduced to just three hours—a major milestone for both civilian and strategic mobility. At the event, PM Modi also flagged off the new Vande Bharat Express services between Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra and Srinagar, marking the launch of India’s premium high-speed rail service in the region. The modern trains are equipped with energy-efficient systems and climate-resilient technology, offering a swift and reliable option for tourists, pilgrims, and local commuters alike.

The visit, PM Modi’s first to the Union Territory after the high-alert Operation Sindoor, was conducted under a tight multi-layered security arrangement. Following the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, which claimed 26 lives, the security forces launched extensive area domination exercises, border surveillance, and crackdowns on potential threats. Roads leading to the public rally venue in Katra were closed or diverted as part of precautionary measures.Beyond rail infrastructure, the Prime Minister laid the foundation for multiple road and healthcare projects aimed at enhancing regional mobility and public welfare. These include the widening of the Rafiabad-Kupwara road on NH-701, construction of the Shopian bypass on NH-444, and new flyovers at Sangrama and Bemina in Srinagar, with an investment totalling ₹1,952 crore. Together, these projects are expected to decongest high-traffic routes and improve transport efficiency in the Valley.

Another key highlight was the launch of the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence in Katra. The ₹350 crore facility is set to become the first medical college in Reasi district and will play a crucial role in expanding healthcare access in the region.

The launch of the Chenab and Anji bridges represents more than just architectural achievement—it signals a turning point in Kashmir’s long journey toward integrated development. By strengthening physical, social, and economic connectivity, the government is positioning the region for sustainable and inclusive growth that aligns with the national vision of equitable development for all.
