Pimpri Chinchwad Wins National Award For Sustainable Urban Transport And Innovative Projects

Pimpri Chinchwad has been nationally recognised for its transformative approach to sustainable urban mobility, winning the ‘Award of Excellence in Urban Transport’ from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA). The accolade highlights the city’s pioneering efforts in promoting non-motorised and eco-friendly transport solutions through innovative planning and financial mechanisms.

The award was conferred at the National Urban Mobility Conference in New Delhi, attended by senior government officials, including Union and state ministers and MoHUA leadership. Representatives from Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) received the honour, underscoring the city’s leadership in advancing urban transport solutions under the category of “City with the Most Innovative Financing Mechanism.” PCMC has made history as India’s first municipality to issue Green Bonds, raising ₹200 crore to fund non-motorised transport (NMT) projects. These funds are channelled into flagship initiatives like the Harit Setu project and the Telco Road redevelopment, which aim to create safer, more inclusive, and environmentally conscious streets. Both projects feature shaded pedestrian walkways, dedicated cycle tracks, safe school zones, cycle parking, rainwater harvesting systems, tree plantations, and improved street furniture and signage.

Initial surveys following the implementation of these projects indicate enhanced safety and comfort for citizens, particularly women and children. The success of these pilot interventions has spurred calls from residents and local representatives to expand the initiatives across the city, reflecting a growing civic awareness of sustainable mobility benefits. “Through well-coordinated planning and citizen engagement, Pimpri Chinchwad has laid a robust foundation for sustainable transport,” said a senior PCMC official. “Harit Setu and Telco Road are not just infrastructure projects—they represent a shift towards greener, safer urban living. This national recognition validates our approach and commitment to future-ready development.”

Officials emphasised the city’s broader vision of enabling short-distance commutes by walking or cycling and promoting public transport for longer journeys, aiming to develop Pimpri Chinchwad into a ‘15-minute city’ by 2036. The Green Bond initiative has been pivotal in ensuring timely funding, allowing PCMC to accelerate development while maintaining fiscal responsibility. With this recognition, Pimpri Chinchwad exemplifies how urban authorities can leverage innovative financing and inclusive planning to drive sustainable mobility, balancing economic growth with environmental and social well-being.
