Pimpri Chinchwad Unveils 15-Minute City Model in Nigdi

Pimpri Chinchwad, Maharashtra – In a significant move towards sustainable urban development, the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has launched India’s inaugural 15-Minute City pilot project in the Pradhikaran-Nigdi area.

This initiative is part of the broader ‘Harit Setu’ programme, aiming to create pedestrian-friendly and eco-conscious urban spaces. The 100-metre pilot stretch exemplifies a holistic approach to urban design, integrating dedicated walking and cycling paths, efficient stormwater management systems, and vibrant public spaces. The design preserves existing green cover, incorporates street furniture, and features murals, transforming the area into a lively, inclusive environment. Residents have lauded the transformation, with many comparing the upgraded streets to international standards.

A delegation from the Global Designing Cities Initiative (GDCI) visited the site, conducting workshops and design sessions to advance inclusive street design. Their involvement underscores the project’s alignment with global best practices in urban planning. Municipal Commissioner Shekhar Singh endorsed the Global Street Design Guide (GSDG), positioning PCMC among global leaders in people-first urban mobility. The GSDG, developed with input from experts in 72 cities across 42 countries, provides a comprehensive framework for designing streets that prioritize pedestrians, cyclists, and transit users .

The ‘Harit Setu’ project is a collaborative effort involving Prasanna Desai Architects (PDA), Pavetech Design Consultants, BG Shirke Construction, and ITDP India. The initiative aims to develop approximately 9 kilometres of safe and accessible walking and cycling corridors by the end of 2026, with plans to expand the model citywide. This pilot project not only addresses the immediate needs of the Nigdi community but also sets a precedent for other cities in India to adopt sustainable and inclusive urban mobility solutions. As urban populations grow, initiatives like the 15-Minute City pilot are crucial in creating cities that are livable, equitable, and resilient.
