Pimpri Chinchwad strengthens resilience with new early warning weather system

The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has unveiled an advanced Rainfall and Flood Forecasting Early Warning System. Developed in collaboration with the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), Pune, this initiative aims to equip the city with cutting-edge tools to anticipate and effectively respond to weather-related hazards.

The system, a product of the National Supercomputing Mission jointly implemented by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and the Department of Science and Technology, integrates high-resolution modeling for weather, hydrology, and air quality. It is capable of generating forecasts up to 72 hours in advance at granular administrative levels, including wards, villages, and tehsils. This precision enables timely interventions, crucial for disaster management and policy-making.

A standout feature is the automated forecast validation mechanism, which assesses the accuracy of predictions by comparing model outputs with observed data. This continuous feedback loop enhances the reliability of early warnings, ensuring that both administrators and citizens receive actionable intelligence. The system also boasts a web-based Geographic Information System (GIS) Decision Support System, offering interactive platforms for alert dissemination, visualization, and data analytics. This empowers stakeholders to make informed decisions, bolstering the city’s preparedness against environmental hazards.

By integrating such advanced technologies, PCMC not only addresses immediate challenges posed by climate variability but also sets a precedent for sustainable urban planning. The initiative underscores the importance of proactive measures in safeguarding communities and infrastructure, aligning with broader goals of creating eco-friendly and equitable cities.
