Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has approved a revised draft Development Plan (DP) that encompasses the entire 173.24 square kilometres under its jurisdiction.
This comprehensive blueprint, valid until 2041, aims to guide the city’s growth in a sustainable and inclusive manner, addressing the needs of a population projected to swell from 17 lakh in 2011 to an estimated 61 lakh by 2041. The revised DP marks the first time that all areas within PCMC’s limits, including the 28 villages merged in recent years, are integrated into a single development framework. This unification is pivotal for coordinated infrastructure development, ensuring that newly incorporated regions receive equitable attention in urban planning initiatives.
Key infrastructural enhancements proposed in the plan include the construction of new roads with a minimum width of 18 meters, and the widening of existing roads in densely populated areas to at least 12 meters. These measures are designed to alleviate traffic congestion and improve connectivity across the city. Additionally, the plan allocates spaces for electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, Pune Metro parking zones, a truck terminus, an intercity bus terminal, a multimodal transport hub, and a sports complex, reflecting a holistic approach to urban mobility and recreation. Cultural considerations are also addressed, with the DP reserving two designated halting spots for the annual Wari processions, a significant religious event in the region. This inclusion underscores the city’s commitment to preserving its cultural heritage while pursuing modernization.
The planning process has been informed by Geographic Information System (GIS) technology, enabling precise mapping and analysis of land use patterns. This data-driven approach facilitates informed decision-making and efficient allocation of resources, aligning with contemporary urban planning standards. Public participation is a cornerstone of the DP’s implementation strategy. Citizens are invited to review the draft plan and submit feedback within a 60-day window. A seven-member review committee, comprising municipal officials and independent experts, will evaluate the suggestions and objections before finalizing the plan for submission to the state government for approval.
The integration of sustainable practices is evident throughout the DP. By prioritizing EV infrastructure, enhancing public transport facilities, and expanding green spaces, the plan aligns with broader goals of reducing carbon emissions and promoting eco-friendly urban living. This forward-looking DP positions Pimpri Chinchwad as a model for balanced urban development, where growth is managed thoughtfully, infrastructure is upgraded responsibly, and cultural traditions are respected. As the city embarks on this transformative journey, the active engagement of its residents will be crucial in shaping a resilient and inclusive urban landscape for the decades to come.
