Pimpri-Chinchwad Faces Drinking Water Contamination Issue

Residents of Wakad, Ravet, and neighbouring areas in Pimpri-Chinchwad have been facing a severe water contamination issue since late May 2025.

The water supplied by the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has been reported to be muddy, greenish in colour, and foul-tasting, leading to numerous health complaints including stomach upsets and diarrhoea. Despite multiple complaints lodged on the PCMC’s ‘Sarathi’ portal, residents claim that no effective action has been taken to resolve the issue. The contaminated water has forced many housing societies to rely on tanker water for domestic use and purchase packaged water for drinking. Some societies have even reported finding worms in their water supply, with Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) levels rising significantly, measuring between 200 to 250 ppm. Initially, residents believed the problem was isolated to their individual water tanks or purifiers, but it soon became evident that the issue was widespread across the area.

PCMC officials have acknowledged the complaints and stated that preventive measures will be taken on priority. They have assured residents that water lines will be flushed to restore safe and clean drinking water. However, residents remain sceptical, citing the growing number of health issues and the lack of timely action by the authorities. The situation has raised serious concerns about the effectiveness of the city’s water purification systems and the accountability of the municipal corporation in ensuring the safety and well-being of its residents. As the monsoon season approaches, there is an urgent need for the PCMC to address the issue comprehensively and implement long-term solutions to prevent such crises in the future.
