PCMC Unveils Major Road Infrastructure Overhaul in Punawale and Wakad

The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) is enhancing the road infrastructure in rapidly developing areas such as Punawale, Wakad, Kiwale, Ravet, and Tathawade with the construction of nine new roads. This initiative is expected to improve the road network by over 75%, addressing longstanding issues of narrow, deteriorating, and congested roads that have plagued these zones. The plan was approved prior to the implementation of the Model Code of Conduct for the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Elections and aims to significantly ease traffic woes and reduce accidents in these burgeoning neighbourhoods.

For IT professionals residing in these areas, especially those working at the nearby Hinjawadi Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park, the poor condition of existing roads has been a major concern. These new roads are seen as a much-needed solution, particularly in light of the recent monsoon, which exacerbated problems like waterlogging. One resident from Punawale remarked, “The PCMC’s proposal covers almost 80% of the road network in our area, which gives us hope for a much smoother commute.”

Additionally, the project promises the integration of essential facilities like stormwater drainage systems, which have been absent in many areas, further contributing to waterlogging. Residents have also called for the installation of proper speed breakers to reduce accidents. These improvements, while crucial for day-to-day convenience, are also aligned with sustainability goals, as better drainage systems will not only manage water more effectively but also mitigate flooding, which has been a persistent civic issue.

The PCMC’s road development efforts are a vital step towards transforming these areas into better-integrated parts of the city, keeping pace with rapid urbanisation. However, despite facing delays in road development after the merger of these regions into the PCMC’s jurisdiction, these areas continue to show high growth potential. The improved infrastructure will not only ease traffic congestion but also play a significant role in making the neighbourhoods more sustainable and resilient in the face of urban challenges.
