PCMC Rolls Out Anti-Rabies Drive, Sets Sights on 70% Civic Immunization

The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has launched a targeted initiative against rabies by establishing a specialized squad dedicated to anti-rabies vaccination across the city. Over the past two months, this proactive team has successfully vaccinated 1,200 dogs, while an additional 600 vaccinations were administered at the sterilization centre in collaboration with Canine Control and Care.

A senior PCMC officer, highlighted, “Our strategy integrates sterilization alongside vaccination to effectively combat the threat of rabies, aiming to achieve 70% herd immunity within the municipal limits. Over the last five years, we have immunized approximately 60,000 stray dogs, contributing significantly to community health and safety.” Despite estimates suggesting 70,000 to 80,000 stray dogs in Pimpri Chinchwad, no formal census has been conducted to determine their exact numbers. The dedicated squad, established earlier this year, comprises veterinary doctors, livestock supervisors, dog catchers, and support staff, equipped with specialized vehicles for medical interventions. Targeting areas with documented incidents of dog bites, the initiative aligns with the National Programme for Rabies Eradication (NPRE), underscoring PCMC’s commitment to public health.

Officials from PCMC, “Collaborating closely with local animal welfare groups ensures our efforts are comprehensive and impactful. Concurrently, we are conducting educational campaigns to raise awareness about rabies prevention and responsible pet ownership among residents.”PCMC’s proactive approach underscores its commitment to enhancing public health through preventive measures, focusing not only on vaccination but also on fostering a culture of responsible pet care and community safety. By engaging stakeholders and leveraging resources effectively, PCMC aims to mitigate the risks associated with rabies, contributing to a safer and healthier environment for all residents of Pimpri Chinchwad.
