The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has approved a comprehensive development plan to upgrade seven key roads in the Wakad, Punawale, and Tathawade areas. These areas, known for their proximity to the Hinjewadi IT Park, have seen exponential growth, particularly with the influx of IT professionals. The proposed project, in line with the area’s development plan (DP), aims to enhance over 75% of the road network and is expected to reduce traffic congestion, improving connectivity and quality of life for residents. Civic officials noted that nearly 60% of the required land for the project is already secured, with efforts underway to acquire the remaining.
These three localities, merged with PCMC in 1997, have been witnessing substantial urbanisation without adequate infrastructure development. Residents have voiced concerns for years regarding basic civic amenities, particularly the poor road conditions that lead to frequent bottlenecks. A city engineer involved in the project assured that essential works, such as drainage and stormwater line installations, will precede road construction to prevent future flooding and ensure durability. The roadwork, scheduled for completion in two years, is expected to transform the commuting experience in the region.
Sustainability lies at the core of the PCMC’s vision for the development of these areas. By integrating robust drainage systems and promoting eco-friendly road materials, the civic body seeks to tackle both infrastructure and environmental concerns simultaneously. Moreover, this project aligns with the city’s broader sustainability goals, which aim to balance rapid urban growth with reduced carbon footprints, lower vehicle emissions, and minimised road maintenance in the long term. Such sustainable practices are becoming increasingly crucial as cities like Pimpri Chinchwad expand.
Comparing these efforts to other urbanising parts of the state, such as Kalyan-Dombivli, where road development has lagged behind urban expansion, PCMC’s decision reflects a proactive approach to urban planning. However, residents remain cautiously optimistic, hoping the civic body delivers on its promises. Community leaders have emphasised that while the announcement is welcome, timely execution is essential to avoid the pitfalls of prior delayed projects
