Patna is poised to emerge as a central node in India’s inland waterways network, with significant infrastructure developments announced to enhance connectivity and economic growth in Bihar. The initiatives aim to transform the region into a sustainable and efficient transport corridor, leveraging the potential of the Ganga River. The government’s plan includes the establishment of a ship repair facility in Patna, which will not only support the maintenance of vessels but also facilitate the construction of new ships.
This development is expected to bolster the local maritime industry and create employment opportunities. In addition to the ship repair facility, 16 new community jetties will be developed across Bihar. These jetties will provide vital access points for passengers and cargo, promoting river-based transport and connecting remote areas to the broader economic network. To further enhance passenger movement, the deployment of Quick Pontoon Opening Mechanisms (QPOMs) at four locations and the construction of two Ro-Pax terminals are planned. These measures aim to reduce waiting times and improve the efficiency of ferry services.
The introduction of hybrid electric catamaran vessels is another key component of the plan. These vessels will offer a green and cost-effective mode of transport, aligning with the government’s commitment to sustainable development. A Joint Task Force comprising the Bihar Government, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, and the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) will be formed to explore sustainable development opportunities along the Ganga River (National Waterway-1) in Bihar. This collaborative effort aims to ensure the effective implementation of the proposed initiatives.
The National Inland Navigation Institute (NINI) in Patna is also set to be upgraded as a Centre of Excellence. This enhancement will provide advanced training and research facilities, supporting the growth of the inland waterways sector in the region. These developments are part of a broader national strategy to rejuvenate inland water transport, which has seen significant growth in recent years. Since 2014, cargo movement on national waterways has increased by over 700%, with operational waterways expanding nearly ninefold. The government’s investment in infrastructure and policy initiatives reflects a commitment to sustainable and efficient transport solutions.
The focus on inland waterways is expected to decongest road and rail networks, reduce logistics costs, and promote eco-friendly transport options. By harnessing the potential of the Ganga River, Bihar aims to position itself as a leader in inland water transport, driving economic growth and improving the quality of life for its residents. As Patna develops into a hub for inland waterways, the region is set to benefit from improved connectivity, enhanced trade opportunities, and a more sustainable transport infrastructure. These initiatives underscore the government’s vision of transforming India’s inland waterways into a vital component of the national transport network.
