The Indian government is set to approve a major infrastructure project that will enhance connectivity in poll-bound Bihar. On Friday, the Cabinet is expected to give the green light to the construction of a 120-km greenfield highway linking Patna to Sasaram. Estimated to cost around Rs 3,700 crore, the four-lane access-controlled highway is designed to improve transportation and economic ties in the region. This new highway aims to connect Patna, Ara, and Sasaram, easing traffic congestion and improving travel efficiency. Preparatory work for the project has already been underway for over a year, with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) leading the charge.
After receiving Cabinet approval, construction will be carried out under a public-private partnership model, with a target completion time of three years. The highway will not only benefit local commuters but is also expected to improve connections to Varanasi and Lucknow, further enhancing interstate trade and travel. The government confirms that land acquisition is nearly complete, and the bidding process will begin immediately after Cabinet approval. With Bihar set to hold assembly elections later this year, the state government is expected to fast-track several infrastructure projects, including highways and railways, in an effort to attract voter support. The ruling BJP-led NDA aims to showcase its commitment to development by accelerating key initiatives in the state.
The 2024-25 Union Budget, presented in July last year, highlighted a series of road development projects for Bihar, including the Patna-Purnea Expressway, Buxar-Bhagalpur Expressway, and improvements to key areas like Bodhgaya and Rajgir. With a combined investment of Rs 26,000 crore, these projects aim to transform the state’s infrastructure landscape. The Patna-Sasaram highway, along with other projects, is expected to play a crucial role in improving Bihar’s transportation network. It will provide much-needed relief to residents and businesses and contribute to the region’s overall economic growth. As the state heads into elections, this highway project is sure to be a key part of the ongoing dialogue on development in Bihar.
