Patna Public Hospital Upgrade Adds Advanced Laser Care

Public healthcare infrastructure in Patna is undergoing another technological upgrade as Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) begins introducing advanced laser-based treatment systems within its expanding hospital complex. The move comes alongside the large-scale redevelopment of the century-old institution and signals a gradual shift towards modern, technology-driven treatment in one of eastern India’s busiest public hospitals.

Officials associated with the hospital’s redevelopment say the introduction of advanced laser technology is intended to improve treatment precision and reduce recovery time for patients who currently rely on conventional surgical procedures. The equipment is being integrated into the new hospital infrastructure that has been built under an ambitious state-led redevelopment programme aimed at transforming PMCH into one of the largest government hospitals in the world. The timing of the upgrade is significant. Over the past year, the hospital has gradually shifted several departments into newly constructed buildings while continuing to expand capacity and install modern medical equipment. The first phase of the redevelopment alone has already added more than a thousand beds and upgraded diagnostic and surgical facilities, while future phases aim to expand the hospital to more than 5,000 beds. For patients, the introduction of advanced laser treatment is likely to reduce dependence on expensive private hospitals, particularly for specialised procedures that require modern equipment. Public-sector hospitals in fast-growing cities such as Patna often struggle with long waiting periods for surgeries and limited access to advanced treatment technologies.

Recent reports have highlighted extended waiting times for complex procedures in government hospitals in the city, underlining the urgency of modernising public healthcare infrastructure. Urban planners and public-health experts say the upgrade also reflects a broader shift in how state governments are approaching healthcare infrastructure in tier-2 cities. Instead of focusing only on building new hospitals, authorities are now investing in technology-enabled treatment systems that can improve efficiency, reduce hospital stays and lower long-term treatment costs. In rapidly growing urban centres like Patna, where population growth continues to put pressure on public facilities, such upgrades can play a key role in improving both accessibility and quality of care. The redevelopment of PMCH has already become one of the largest public healthcare infrastructure projects in eastern India, with investments running into several thousand crore rupees. Once completed, the expanded hospital is expected to handle a much larger patient load while also offering specialised treatment that was previously available only in private institutions or in metro cities.

While the introduction of advanced laser technology represents a major step forward, the long-term success of the upgrade will depend on how effectively it is integrated with trained medical staff, efficient patient management systems and continued investment in public healthcare. For Patna’s growing urban population, the development could mark an important shift towards more accessible, modern and resilient public health infrastructure in the coming years.
