Patna Metro Set For Trial Run Ahead Of Bihar Elections This Week

Patna’s long-awaited metro project is moving closer to reality, with the first trial run scheduled this week on a newly laid 800-metre stretch of track. Officials confirmed that the exercise will focus on checking train speed, signalling systems and track safety, paving the way for full-fledged operations in the months ahead.

The commencement of trials signals that Bihar’s capital is finally entering the modern metro era, a transformation expected to redefine urban mobility in a city struggling with congestion, rising pollution, and an overburdened road network. Experts noted that the Patna Metro project aligns with the broader vision of building sustainable, low-carbon urban transport systems across India. As part of the readiness drive, the metro depot near Bairia bus terminal has successfully charged a 132 kV switch station, ensuring uninterrupted power supply for trial operations. Four power transformers of 30 MVA each have been installed, two of which are designed to convert the 132 kV transmission line into 33 kV, while others will support the 25 kV traction supply required for metro trains. This robust electrical backbone is expected to support not only train movement but also station utilities such as lifts, air-conditioning, and lighting.

Officials confirmed that ticket vending machines, costing nearly ₹2.89 crore, will be installed at all stations under the first phase. These machines will be designed to accept multiple payment modes including cash, credit cards, and debit cards, ensuring accessibility for passengers across economic categories. The procurement process for managing these machines is being overseen by a leading metro rail corporation, signalling efforts to replicate best practices from other Indian cities. In the initial phase, the metro will connect key nodes including New Pataliputra bus terminal, Zero Mile, Ghootnath, Khemanichak and Malahi. The fare structure, though not officially announced, is expected to be affordable, with a minimum ticket of ₹15 and a maximum of ₹30 on the Red Line corridor. Analysts believe that such pricing will make the metro competitive with other local transport while ensuring accessibility for daily wage earners and middle-income commuters.

The metro trial comes at a politically significant juncture, coinciding with the run-up to the state elections. Yet, urban experts stress that beyond electoral timelines, Patna Metro represents a vital step toward a cleaner, greener, and more efficient transport system. If executed effectively, it could reduce the city’s dependence on fossil fuel-based road transport and contribute meaningfully to Bihar’s climate resilience strategy. The upcoming trial, therefore, is not just a technical exercise but a milestone in Patna’s aspiration to emerge as a modern, inclusive, and sustainable city.
