Patna Airport Unveils Rs 1200 Crore Terminal Boosting Capacity

Patna’s Jayprakash Narayan International Airport has inaugurated its new terminal building, marking a significant milestone in the city’s aviation infrastructure.

The ₹1200 crore project aims to enhance passenger experience and accommodate the growing air traffic demand in the region. The two-storey terminal spans 65,155 square metres and is designed to handle up to 4,500 passengers during peak hours. This expansion increases the airport’s annual capacity from 2.5 million to 10 million passengers. The terminal features modern amenities, including 54 check-in counters, five passenger boarding bridges, five conveyor belts, and in-line X-ray baggage inspection systems, ensuring efficient passenger movement.

Architecturally, the terminal draws inspiration from the ancient Nalanda University ruins, incorporating elements of Bihar’s rich heritage. The design has been awarded a four-star GRIHA rating, highlighting its commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency. In addition to the terminal, the project includes the construction of six new aircraft parking stands, increasing the total to eleven, and a multi-level car parking facility. The old terminal building will be demolished to make way for additional parking bays, further enhancing the airport’s capacity.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who also laid the foundation stone for a new civil enclave at Bihta Airport, a move aimed at decongesting Patna’s air traffic and promoting regional connectivity. The event was streamed live to officials and attendees at Bihta, underscoring the project’s significance for the state’s development. The expansion of Patna Airport is expected to boost the local economy by improving connectivity, attracting investment, and creating employment opportunities. With the new terminal now operational, the airport is poised to meet the increasing travel demands of the region, offering passengers a modern and efficient travel experience.

As the aviation landscape in Bihar continues to evolve, the developments at Patna and Bihta airports signify a commitment to enhancing infrastructure and fostering economic growth. These initiatives align with broader efforts to modernize India’s transportation networks and improve connectivity across the country.
