Patna is set to witness a significant leap in its aviation infrastructure with the inauguration of a state-of-the-art terminal at Jayprakash Narayan International Airport on May 29, 2025.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the new terminal, marking a pivotal moment in the city’s connectivity and economic growth. Simultaneously, the foundation stone for a new terminal at Bihta Airport will be laid, further enhancing the region’s aviation capabilities. The newly constructed terminal at Patna Airport spans 65,155 square metres and is designed to handle up to 4,500 passengers during peak hours, a substantial increase from the current capacity of 1,300. This expansion aims to boost the airport’s annual passenger capacity from 3 million to 10 million, accommodating the growing demand for air travel in the region.
Equipped with modern amenities, the terminal features 54 check-in counters, five passenger boarding bridges, five conveyor belts, and eight in-line X-ray baggage inspection systems. The design draws inspiration from the ancient Nalanda University ruins, incorporating elements of Bihar’s rich cultural heritage. The building has been awarded a four-star rating for its sustainable features, aligning with global standards for eco-friendly infrastructure.
The terminal’s operational areas are strategically divided, with arrivals managed on the ground floor and departures on the first floor. A multi-level parking facility connected directly to the terminal will accommodate up to 7,450 vehicles, ensuring seamless access for passengers. Flight operations from the new terminal are expected to commence in the first week of June 2025, following the inauguration. Located approximately 20 kilometres from Patna, Bihta Airport is poised to become a significant hub for regional air travel. The proposed terminal at Bihta will cover 68,000 square metres, including 52,000 square metres across the ground and first floors and a 16,000 square metre basement. It is designed to accommodate 3,000 passengers during peak hours and is projected to serve 5 million travellers annually.
The terminal will offer a range of passenger amenities, including VIP lounges, cafeterias, and retail spaces, enhancing the overall travel experience. The development of Bihta Airport is expected to alleviate congestion at the existing Patna Airport and provide additional capacity to meet the growing demand for air travel in the region. The expansion of Patna’s aviation infrastructure is a testament to the region’s commitment to enhancing connectivity and fostering economic growth. The development of Bihta Airport, in particular, is expected to stimulate local economies, create employment opportunities, and promote tourism. Moreover, the integration of sustainable practices in both terminals underscores the commitment to environmental responsibility and the creation of eco-friendly urban spaces.
As Patna continues to evolve into a modern metropolis, these developments signify a crucial step towards achieving a zero-net carbon, eco-friendly, and equitable urban environment. The enhancements in aviation infrastructure are poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the city’s future, ensuring it remains a vibrant and sustainable hub for commerce, culture, and connectivity.
