Bihar’s connectivity and urban development unfolds today as the state-of-the-art terminal building of Jayprakash Narayan International Airport in Patna officially opens its doors to the public.
Designed to usher in a new era of world-class amenities and operational efficiency, this significant infrastructure upgrade symbolises Patna’s burgeoning aspirations towards becoming a more accessible, sustainable, and modern urban hub, seamlessly integrating advanced aviation technology with deep cultural roots. The newly constructed two-storey terminal, a sprawling 65,150 square metres marvel, is engineered to significantly enhance passenger flow and experience.
With dedicated arrival facilities on the ground floor and departures on the first, it boasts the capacity to comfortably accommodate 3,000 passengers during peak hours, equally split between the two levels. The operational shift of all flights to this new facility, commencing at 7 AM on Tuesday, June 3, marks a pivotal moment for regional air travel. Airport officials confirm the final stages of this transition, highlighting a comprehensive upgrade designed to improve service quality and streamline operational logistics.
Beyond its impressive architectural scale, the terminal is equipped with advanced features aimed at modernising the travel experience. Passengers will benefit from 64 check-in counters, nine automatic tray retrieval systems (ATRS), and the convenience of Digi Yatri gates for contactless travel. Security checks are strategically located on the first floor, while the arrivals hall features four high-capacity conveyor belts to expedite baggage retrieval. This expansion is set to dramatically increase the airport’s annual passenger handling capacity from a previous 25 lakh to a staggering 1 crore, signalling robust growth in air traffic and economic activity for the region. The new apron can accommodate 11 aircraft, including nine Code C-A320 and two ATR, with seven parking bays already operational. The remaining bays will be completed post the demolition of the old terminal, making space for four new aerobridges.
In a move that aligns with the global shift towards more sustainable urban infrastructure, the terminal’s design pays homage to Bihar’s rich cultural heritage. Traditional artwork, murals, and carvings, drawing inspiration from the ancient ruins of Nalanda, are seamlessly integrated throughout the building. More significantly, the structure incorporates an insulated roofing system, energy-efficient LED lighting, and heat-minimising glazing, collectively targeting a commendable 4-star GRIHA eco-rating. This commitment to green building standards positions Patna Airport as a leader in promoting zero net carbon and eco-friendly development within the aviation sector, contributing to a more sustainable urban environment.
Accessibility to the new terminal has also been meticulously planned. A dedicated new entrance gate allows departing passengers direct access to the departure level via a flyover, while arriving passengers will exit seamlessly from the ground-level arrivals area. Complementing this, a multi-level car park (MLCP) on the city side, also opening on June 3, will offer organised parking for 1,100 vehicles, with a transparent fee structure for various vehicle types. This holistic approach to infrastructure development, integrating enhanced passenger experience, increased operational capacity, cultural reverence, and environmental stewardship, firmly establishes Patna’s Jayprakash Narayan International Airport as a beacon of modern, sustainable, and equitable urban connectivity.
