Panvel’s ₹26-Crore Waste Overhaul Begins

In a decisive move to modernise its waste management infrastructure, the Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) has launched two state-of-the-art Waste Transfer Stations (WTS) in New Panvel and Kalamboli. With an investment of ₹26 crore, this ambitious project is poised to transform waste handling efficiency, streamline logistics, and promote sustainable urban living.

Currently, Panvel generates around 400 tonnes of waste daily, transported to the Ghot solid waste management facility in Taloja by nearly 100 vehicles. This traditional method not only escalates transportation costs but also increases the risk of environmental hazards due to spillage and inefficiencies. To counter these challenges, PMC is establishing two strategically located WTS units. The first, in Sector 21 of New Panvel, covers 2,266 square metres with a budget of ₹11.77 crore. The second, near Roadpali pond in Kalamboli, commands an investment of ₹14.24 crore. These projects are co-funded by the Finance Commission of India, the Maharashtra state government, and PMC.

A critical component of the Swachh Maharashtra Mission, the initiative aligns with the Solid Waste Management Act, advocating scientific waste processing. The WTS facilities will act as intermediate hubs where waste is compressed into compact units, significantly reducing volume before being transported in specialised 20-tonne capacity containers. This shift is expected to curtail fuel consumption, reduce operational costs, and minimise travel time. Moreover, it will mitigate the risks of waste spillage, leakage, and odour-related issues, enhancing hygiene standards in residential areas.

PMC’s long-term vision includes the development of eight such transfer stations citywide, establishing an integrated, eco-friendly waste management network. Municipal officials emphasise that the new system will feature odour control measures and noise reduction technologies, ensuring minimal disruption to surrounding communities. This strategic overhaul not only reflects PMC’s commitment to sustainability but also sets a benchmark for urban waste management across Maharashtra. By adopting a structured, cost-effective approach, Panvel is positioning itself as a model city for environmental responsibility and efficient urban governance.
