Panvel to Install 1,500 AI-Enabled Cameras at 475 Locations for Enhanced Security
In a major push towards enhancing public safety, the Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) has announced the installation of 1,500 AI-enabled CCTV cameras across 475 key locations by the end of 2025. This ambitious project, with an allocation of INR 132 crore, aims to strengthen surveillance capabilities and improve law enforcement efficiency in the rapidly growing city.
The decision follows persistent requests from the Navi Mumbai Police Department, highlighting the need for advanced security infrastructure to manage the increasing population and traffic congestion due to urban expansion. The cameras will be strategically placed at major intersections, crowded public areas, and sensitive zones, ensuring comprehensive coverage. These AI-powered cameras will come with advanced features such as facial recognition technology, aiding real-time identification of individuals involved in criminal activities or missing persons cases. Additionally, the cameras will be equipped with night vision capabilities to ensure round-the-clock monitoring, even in poorly lit or high-risk areas. Some cameras will also have public address systems installed at traffic signals and busy public spaces, enabling authorities to broadcast emergency alerts and important announcements.
To ensure efficient management, two state-of-the-art command centres will oversee the surveillance network—one at the PMC headquarters and another at the Deputy Commissioner of Police’s office (Zone II). These command centres will be directly connected to the police control room, allowing real-time monitoring and quick response to emergencies or security threats. The groundwork for the project has already begun. Work orders have been issued, and ground surveys are complete. Installation of poles and cabling is currently underway, with the actual camera installation expected to commence shortly. This marks a significant upgrade from the existing 44 CCTV cameras currently operational under police jurisdiction, which are insufficient given Panvel’s rapid growth.
With Panvel witnessing a surge in population due to large-scale infrastructure projects and urban development, the need for enhanced security has become critical. The new AI-driven surveillance network is expected to play a vital role in crime prevention, improving public safety, and aiding in effective traffic management, particularly in congested areas. Officials believe that this advanced system will act as a force multiplier for the police, enhancing their ability to monitor, detect, and respond swiftly to incidents. Moreover, the project aligns with the broader vision of transforming Panvel into a smart and secure city, leveraging cutting-edge technology to ensure the safety and well-being of its residents.
