Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) has once again been recognised for its environmental commitment, winning the Majhi Vasundhara Abhiyan – Green Success Story Award 2025. This marks the third consecutive year that the civic body has earned the state government’s prestigious honour for leadership in climate action and eco-friendly city management.
The award was presented at a state-level ceremony in Mumbai, organised by the Maharashtra Government’s Climate Action Cell. Senior state officials acknowledged Panvel’s consistent performance under the Majhi Vasundhara Abhiyan, a flagship initiative designed to promote environmental conservation, green infrastructure, and citizen-led climate resilience across urban and rural areas of Maharashtra. Officials from the Panvel civic body received the award, describing it as a recognition of the city’s ongoing efforts to balance urban growth with ecological responsibility. The municipal commissioner expressed that Panvel’s development strategy has been guided by a long-term vision to create a “cleaner, healthier, and environmentally balanced city” by integrating technology-driven solutions with community participation.
Panvel was also declared the best-performing Amrut City in the three to ten lakh population category, a benchmark that underscores its commitment to sustainable infrastructure and improved air quality. In recent years, the civic body has rolled out several innovative environmental interventions aimed at curbing air pollution and improving urban liveability. Among these measures, the deployment of fog cannon vehicles across various city zones has significantly helped in suppressing airborne dust particles — a major contributor to respiratory ailments in urban environments. Additionally, an advanced Air Monitoring Van has been introduced to track real-time air quality indicators, enabling data-driven decisions on pollution control.
In the coming months, PMC plans to install ten air purification systems at key intersections and public spaces to further improve air quality. Complementing these efforts, a Real-Time Ambient Air Quality Monitoring System is being set up along with digital display boards that will keep residents informed of the city’s air quality index at all times. Urban policy experts have lauded Panvel’s approach as a replicable model for other mid-sized cities striving to achieve sustainable urbanisation without compromising on economic growth. They noted that Panvel’s emphasis on data transparency, participatory governance, and proactive mitigation measures represents a practical roadmap toward achieving Maharashtra’s broader climate action goals.
With the Green Success Story Award 2025, Panvel’s civic leadership has reinforced its vision of transforming the city into a resilient, low-carbon urban centre — one that aligns with India’s long-term environmental sustainability agenda.
