Panvel Municipal Corporation Cracks Down on Property Tax Defaulters, Recovers Lakhs
In a bid to recover unpaid property taxes, the Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) has adopted a stringent approach, issuing pre-seizure notices and warrants to those who have defaulted on their taxes. The initiative, which covers all four divisions of the municipal corporation, has led to the distribution of 447 pre-seizure notices and the issuance of 27 warrants for non-compliant property owners. The aggressive action is in line with the PMC’s commitment to ensuring fiscal responsibility and timely revenue collection, which is critical for funding municipal services and infrastructure projects.
Swaroop Kharge, the Property Tax Deputy Commissioner and Assistant Commissioner at PMC, has stressed the importance of timely property tax payments for the functioning of the municipality. He confirmed that actions would escalate if taxes were not paid within the stipulated time. “Strict instructions have been issued stating that if taxes are not paid, seizure and attachment actions will be carried out,” he said. The PMC’s move to initiate seizures and attachment actions under the Maharashtra Municipalities Act highlights the seriousness of the defaulters’ non-compliance. The law allows the seizure of movable and immovable properties, which can then be auctioned to recover the unpaid dues.
These actions have already yielded positive results, with substantial amounts recovered from some prominent defaulters. For instance, the Kharghar recovery squad was able to collect ₹86 lakh from a well-known shopping mall. In another major breakthrough, a prominent educational institution in Kharghar paid ₹4.69 crore in outstanding property taxes. This aggressive tax recovery method, although strict, has demonstrated its effectiveness, prompting other defaulters to settle their dues in order to avoid similar repercussions.
