Panvel Municipal Corporation Approves Rs 48.40 Crore Gadhi River Bridge To Ease Traffic

Panvel is set to receive a significant mobility upgrade with the municipal administration approving a new bridge across the Gadhi River, a move aimed at easing persistent congestion and strengthening connectivity in one of the region’s fastest-growing transit corridors. The project, estimated at ₹48.40 crore, is expected to improve traffic flow between Panvel and neighbouring growth clusters, particularly Karanjade and Vadghar, which have seen steady population expansion.

The approval was issued after public representatives highlighted the mounting inconvenience faced by daily commuters who rely on the narrow existing bridge connecting Karanjade. According to civic officials, this structure has long exceeded its handling capacity, with peak-hour delays becoming routine. The situation is likely to intensify as development activity surrounding the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport accelerates, prompting the administration to treat the new bridge as an essential mobility intervention rather than a long-term aspiration. The planned structure is designed to be a four-lane bridge spanning 240 metres, with a width of 21.5 metres. It will link a 40-feet-wide municipal road on the eastern bank with a 20-metre-wide CIDCO road leading into the Karanjade node on the western side. Civic engineers said this linkage will help distribute vehicular load more evenly, reducing bottlenecks on the existing alignment and supporting the larger regional road network.

A senior municipal official noted that improving mobility is central to building a more liveable and equitable city, particularly in fast-urbanising nodes such as Panvel. Strengthening infrastructure that reduces fuel wastage, travel time and localised emissions, the official added, contributes indirectly to broader sustainability goals by encouraging more predictable and efficient vehicular movement. Before construction begins, the civic body will seek mandatory clearances from CIDCO, the Water Resources Department and the Public Works Department. The conceptual design will also undergo scrutiny by a technical institute such as IIT Mumbai or VJTI Mumbai to ensure structural robustness and long-term resilience, especially given the area’s monsoon-related vulnerabilities.

Urban planning experts observe that bridging infrastructure gaps in peripheral growth zones like Panvel is essential for balanced regional development. They note that while large-scale projects such as airports and new townships draw investment, last-mile mobility infrastructure determines whether these areas remain inclusive and accessible for everyday commuters. The administration expects the bridge to bring considerable relief to residents who currently spend extended periods navigating narrow stretches during peak traffic. It also anticipates wider economic benefits, including smoother logistics movement and reduced vehicular idling, aligning with the city’s gradual shift toward more sustainable and energy-efficient mobility systems.

As Panvel’s urban footprint expands, civic leaders have indicated that similar interventions will be prioritised to ensure that mobility infrastructure evolves alongside population growth. The river-bridge project, they said, is an early step towards shaping a more connected and climate-conscious urban future.
