A concerning incident unfolded in Panaji on Monday morning as a newly constructed drain, spanning a 10-meter section, collapsed, sparking safety apprehensions for the nearby Taad-Maad temple in St. Inez. The collapse, attributed to deep excavation work related to the ongoing sewerage project under the Smart City Mission, has prompted authorities to take immediate action to address the situation and ensure public safety.
Located beneath a banyan tree, the Taad-Maad temple’s structural integrity is now a subject of scrutiny, with fears mounting over the risk of the tree collapsing due to the adjacent excavation activities. Officials visited the site promptly and instructed the Smart City contractor to suspend all work until adequate measures are implemented to secure the temple premises.
While a senior government official reassured that there is no imminent danger to the temple, attributing the incident to necessary excavation for laying a sewerage trunk pipeline, precautionary measures are being prioritized. Plans are underway to backfill the excavated area after the sewerage pipe installation, followed by the reconstruction of the drain to restore normalcy.
In response to the incident, Imagine Panaji Smart City Development Ltd (IPSCDL) has introduced an advanced ‘wellpoint system’ at the excavation site to expedite the dewatering process. Despite these efforts, the recent heavy rainfall exacerbated groundwater levels, contributing to the drain collapse.
Fortunately, vigilant laborers managed to evacuate the area just moments before the collapse, averting potential casualties. However, concerns persist regarding the safety of the surrounding area, leading to the continued closure of the road stretch from Caculo Mall to Tonca Sewerage Treatment Plant (STP) for both pedestrians and motorists.
As IPSCDL works diligently to rectify the damage and implement corrective measures, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges and risks associated with infrastructure development projects, emphasizing the paramount importance of stringent safety protocols and proactive risk management strategies to safeguard public assets and ensure community well-being.
In the wake of this incident, stakeholders are urged to prioritize safety and adopt robust measures to mitigate risks, fostering a culture of accountability and diligence in future infrastructure endeavors.
