Goa’s political landscape is abuzz with speculation as Health Minister Vishwajit Rane faces potential removal from the state cabinet following a widely condemned public outburst against a senior doctor at Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). The incident, captured on video and subsequently gone viral, has ignited widespread public and medical fraternity outrage, placing significant pressure on Chief Minister Pramod Sawant to take decisive action.

The footage shows the minister issuing what many perceive as a direct threat, stating, “Before my BP boils and I take some other action.” This was swiftly followed by the immediate suspension of the doctor, without affording an opportunity for explanation or defence. The incident has drawn sharp criticism from various quarters, including the Indian Medical Association (IMA), healthcare worker associations, and even members within the ruling party. Critics have universally condemned the minister’s actions as a blatant display of political overreach and an abuse of power. A senior IMA official remarked, “This isn’t governing; it’s theatre. It’s shameful for a senior minister to humiliate a doctor on camera for the sake of appearances.” This sentiment resonates deeply within a society striving for professional respect and ethical conduct in public life.
Hospital authorities have clarified that the suspended doctor was merely adhering to standard operating procedures. The patient in question had been advised a vitamin B12 injection, a routine procedure typically administered via the outpatient day care programme, not the emergency room. Legal experts have underscored the gravity of the situation, suggesting that Minister Rane’s actions may potentially contravene sections of the newly enacted Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), specifically Sections 224 (assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from discharge of duty) and 351 (use of criminal force not on grave provocation). The IMA has unequivocally demanded an unconditional public apology and the immediate reinstatement of the suspended doctor, threatening widespread protests and medical strikes across Goa if their demands are not met.
