The Palakkad Division of Southern Railway has been embroiled in a significant labour dispute as loco pilots, affiliated with the All India Loco Running Staff Association (AILRSA), have initiated a strike since June 1st. The strike, demanding an increase in rest hours from 30 to 46, has disrupted operations, impacting 46 train services within the division.
In a stern response, the Palakkad Division has accused retired loco pilots of orchestrating the strike, alleging they have influenced active personnel to contravene established working rules. The involvement of retired personnel has added complexity to the situation, complicating negotiations and exacerbating operational disruptions. According to official statements from the Railways, the strike has been isolated to the Palakkad Division, contrasting with other railway depots across India. The Railways assert that loco pilots in Palakkad currently operate at only 80% of the stipulated working hours compared to their counterparts in adjacent divisions such as South Western, South Central Railways, and Chennai Division of Southern Railway. Furthermore, the Railways have labeled the union leading the strike as ‘unrecognized’, emphasizing their stance against actions that deviate from approved labour laws. They argue that such disruptions not only undermine efficiency but also threaten to destabilize crew rosters, exacerbating operational inefficiencies.
Since the commencement of the strike, the Palakkad Division has reported delays and cancellations affecting both passenger and goods train services. Particularly, 46 goods train services have been directly impacted due to delayed reporting of loco pilots for duty. In response to these challenges, the Railways have vowed to take stringent actions against those participating in unlawful strikes, reaffirming their commitment to maintaining operational integrity and adherence to labour regulations. They have urged for a swift resolution to the standoff, emphasizing the need for dialogue to address the demands of the loco pilots within the framework of established norms and regulations.
