Orange alert issued for Delhi rain and storms today

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Delhi on May 30, warning residents of potential thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds reaching speeds up to 60 km/h.

This alert follows light showers experienced in parts of the city on Thursday evening, which provided minimal relief from the prevailing heat and humidity. According to the IMD, the current weather conditions are influenced by an upper air cyclonic circulation over west Rajasthan and another over northern central Uttar Pradesh. These systems are contributing to the likelihood of scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds, over Delhi and other parts of northwest India.

Residents are advised to exercise caution, especially during peak weather activity. The IMD recommends staying indoors during thunderstorms, avoiding shelter under trees, and securing loose objects that could be displaced by strong winds. The orange alert signifies that the expected weather conditions could disrupt daily activities and pose risks to life and property. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely and will provide updates as necessary. In addition to Delhi, the IMD has also issued weather advisories for other regions. Kerala is under a red alert due to heavy rainfall, leading to the closure of schools in several districts. Thunderstorms and gusty winds are also expected in parts of Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, and other areas over the next few days.

The advancement of the southwest monsoon is contributing to these weather patterns, bringing much-needed relief from the heat but also posing challenges due to sudden and severe weather events. Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official channels and take necessary precautions to ensure safety. As the city prepares for the anticipated weather changes, the focus remains on public safety and minimizing disruptions. The IMD continues to monitor the situation and will issue further advisories as needed.
