The Indian Armed Forces launched ‘Operation Sindoor’ in the early hours of May 7, 2025.
The operation targeted nine terrorist infrastructure sites across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoK), marking one of the most significant cross-border actions in recent years. The strikes were carried out under the direct supervision of the highest levels of the Indian government, emphasizing the gravity of the situation and India’s commitment to national security. The Ministry of Defence stated that the operation was a “focused, measured, and non-escalatory” action aimed at dismantling terrorist networks responsible for orchestrating attacks against India. Notably, the strikes avoided Pakistani military installations, underscoring India’s intent to target only terrorist infrastructure.
The catalyst for Operation Sindoor was the brutal attack in Pahalgam on April 22, where 25 Indian tourists and one Nepali citizen were killed. The Resistance Front (TRF), believed to be affiliated with Lashkar-e-Taiba, initially claimed responsibility but later retracted. The attack involved militants singling out non-Muslim tourists, leading to widespread condemnation and a unified call for action within India. Among the nine targeted sites were locations in Bahawalpur and Muridke, known strongholds of Jaish-e-Mohammed and Lashkar-e-Taiba, respectively. The operation employed precision-guided munitions to minimize collateral damage, reflecting India’s strategic restraint.
Pakistan’s response was swift, labeling the strikes as an “act of war” and claiming civilian casualties, including women and children. Islamabad reported that the attacks hit six locations, resulting in at least eight deaths and over 35 injuries. In retaliation, Pakistan claimed to have shot down two Indian fighter jets, though India has not confirmed these losses. The international community has expressed deep concern over the escalating tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors. The United Nations and several countries have called for restraint and urged both sides to engage in dialogue to prevent further escalation.
Domestically, the Indian government has taken measures to ensure public safety, including heightened security alerts and temporary suspension of flights in northern regions. Airports in Jammu, Srinagar, and Leh have been affected, with several flights canceled or diverted. Operation Sindoor signifies a pivotal moment in India’s counter-terrorism strategy, demonstrating a willingness to take decisive action against threats while maintaining a calibrated approach to avoid broader conflict.
