Old Goa to Gandaulim Road Closed June 23

At one of Old Goa’s busiest railway crossings, the authorities have initiated the construction of a road overbridge to alleviate daily congestion. The infrastructure upgrade, spearheaded by GSIDC, will result in the temporary closure of the Old Goa–Gandaulim route from June 23. Commuters are advised to follow diversions as the project aims to bring long-term traffic relief to the region.

The Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC) has officially begun work on a long-awaited road overbridge at the Old Goa railway crossing. This development follows years of complaints from residents and commuters over frequent delays and traffic pile-ups at the level crossing, particularly during peak morning and evening hours. The area is a key commuter route, connecting several important localities, including Gandaulim and central Old Goa.

Authorities announced that, beginning June 23, the existing road link between Old Goa and Gandaulim will be fully closed to vehicular movement. The indefinite closure is expected to fast-track the overbridge construction, allowing engineers to work without traffic disruptions. Affected commuters have been advised to follow alternate routes, and the state traffic department is working to put adequate diversions and signage in place.

The overbridge, once completed, is expected to significantly reduce traffic bottlenecks at the existing railway level crossing. With vehicular flow from heavy trucks, school buses, and daily commuters contributing to chaotic traffic scenes, the bridge promises smoother transit and enhanced road safety. Officials have indicated that the construction timeline will depend on weather conditions and operational coordination with Indian Railways.

GSIDC officials emphasised that the overbridge forms part of a broader infrastructure strategy aimed at decongesting urban centres and improving last-mile connectivity across Goa. While short-term inconvenience is anticipated, authorities stress the need for public cooperation during the construction phase. The initiative is also expected to contribute to safer, more efficient movement for emergency services and public transport vehicles, especially in flood-prone monsoon months.

As Goa pushes toward smarter and more sustainable infrastructure, the Old Goa road overbridge represents a critical step in upgrading the state’s transport network. While the temporary route closure may disrupt regular commuting patterns, the long-term benefits of streamlined traffic and reduced travel time promise substantial gains.
