Odisha Railway Drives Sustainable Rath Yatra Travel

Puri’s railway network has undergone a strategic transformation ahead of the Rath Yatra, marrying sustainable infrastructure with inclusive pilgrim services. Under the Purvodaya policy, Odisha’s railway budget soared twelve‑fold from the 2009–14 average to over ₹10,500 crore in 2025–26. This investment has translated into laying more than 2,100 km of new tracks—surpassing Malaysia’s entire rail length—and mobilising ₹73,000 crore worth of ongoing rail projects.

Additionally, 59 Amrit stations—including 16 in aspirational districts—are being revitalised, bolstering regional connectivity. In a record drive for Rath Yatra 2025, Indian Railways is operating 1,215 trains—850 scheduled and 365 special services—up from roughly 303 special trains a decade ago. These trains link every corner of Odisha, from tribal and aspirational districts such as Kalahandi, Balangir, Koraput and Nuapada to Puri’s sacred precincts. A cornerstone innovation is the AI‑driven demand prediction platform, enabling real‑time dynamic scheduling to match pilgrim needs. Complementing this, ECoR has deployed a dedicated app, digital displays, extra ticket counters, mobile ATVM units, and a “control room” to monitor and manage crowd flows. The railway zone has also set up a 25,000‑capacity holding yard, and is prepped for a pilgrim swell of up to 20 lakh, with daily peaks expected at 2 lakh.

Modular shelters, cool water booths and shaded waiting zones provide relief from Puri’s summer heat . Sanitation has been overhauled too—jet‑cleaners, vacuum sewage trucks ensure track and platform hygiene. Food courts, 2.5 lakh free meals, and portable medical booths ensure dignified and healthy travel conditions—all with minimal environmental strain. Enhanced security measures include CCTV, drones, RPF/GRP personnel, and facial recognition at key choke points . From accessibility provisions for Divyangjans and elderly travellers to women‑friendly facilities and medical aid for all, the railways have embraced universal design. A dedicated technical squad along the Yatra route maintains the massive chariots using screw‑jack mechanisms, ensuring safe and synchronised movement. This unique railway‑led operation showcases railways’ commitment to blending cultural reverence with engineering rigour.

By upgrading stations, enhancing electrified connectivity, and embedding digital solutions, Odisha Rail supports sustainable, low‑carbon pilgrim mobility aligned with zero‑net‑carbon urban agendas. Its equitable reach—into tribal and aspirational regions—advances inclusive growth and urban integration. Indian Railways has reimagined Puri Station into a high‑capacity, eco‑responsive, and socially equitable hub—one that resonates with city‑centric sustainability goals. As millions embark on their spiritual journey, Odisha Rail’s model sets a new benchmark for pilgrimage transport in the 21st century.
