Odisha Mining Corporation Sets New Production Record

Odisha Mining Corporation (OMC) has achieved its highest ever mineral production in the financial year 2025–26, underscoring the expanding role of domestic mineral supply in India’s industrial ecosystem and its potential impact on urban infrastructure development. The state-owned mining major recorded total output of 44.82 million tonnes (MT), with iron ore production — the backbone of steel and construction value chains — reaching a record 40.02 MT, marking robust year-on-year growth.

This milestone reflects concerted efforts to enhance operational efficiency and scale up extraction across key mineral segments. Alongside iron ore, chrome ore output rose to 1.69 MT and bauxite to 2.83 MT, with all major mines meeting or exceeding their production targets. Overall mineral dispatches stood at 42.524 MT in FY26, contributing to OMC’s highest provisional revenue on record. Mineral resources such as iron ore and bauxite are fundamental inputs for sectors driving urban transformation. Iron ore feeds steelmaking, which underpins infrastructure construction, mass transit systems, high-density housing and resilient public facilities. Bauxite is critical for aluminium production, used in energy-efficient building facades, lightweight transportation components and renewable energy systems. The increase in OMC’s output thus has cascading implications for urban development, potentially easing material constraints and supporting more cost-effective project execution.Industry analysts point out that strengthening domestic mineral supply chains is key to reducing reliance on imports and insulating India’s infrastructure programmes from global commodity volatility. With government-led initiatives like the National Infrastructure Pipeline and smart city missions in full swing, reliable access to primary materials can help maintain project momentum and budgetary discipline.

OMC’s performance also aligns with broader economic trends in Odisha, where mining and allied industries form a significant part of the state’s industrial base. Odisha holds a substantial share of India’s iron ore reserves and contributes meaningfully to the country’s steel production capacity. By scaling up production sustainably, the corporation supports not only state economic growth but also national objectives for industrial self-reliance. However, the environmental and social dimensions of expanded mining activity remain critical considerations for sustainable urban and regional planning. Responsible mining practices — including land rehabilitation, dust suppression, water conservation and community engagement — are essential to balance economic gains with ecological integrity and quality of life in adjacent towns and cities. Officials have highlighted OMC’s adoption of scientific mining techniques and modern technologies as part of this effort, signalling a commitment to minimizing adverse impacts. Looking ahead, sustaining production growth while deepening value addition will be central to OMC’s contribution to India’s industrial landscape. Investments in mineral processing facilities, enhanced logistics networks and workforce skill development can help integrate mining outputs more effectively into manufacturing and construction supply chains.

For urban planners and infrastructure developers, predictable access to key minerals can facilitate more resilient project planning and cost management. As India’s cities expand and upgrade, linking raw material supply with sustainable development strategies will be vital to building equitable, climate-responsive urban futures.
