Odisha’s industrial landscape is witnessing a significant stride in environmental stewardship, with Tata Steel Kalinganagar achieving an impressive over 40% reduction in freshwater consumption. This landmark accomplishment sets a new benchmark for the steel industry, showcasing how advanced technological integration and a steadfast commitment to sustainability can drive significant ecological improvements, vital for fostering zero-net-carbon, eco-friendly, and resource-efficient industrial ecosystems within urban and regional development frameworks.

The remarkable reduction in freshwater reliance at Tata Steel Kalinganagar is the culmination of continuous innovation and the deployment of cutting-edge technologies over the past seven years. Key initiatives include the implementation of a Central Effluent Treatment Plant equipped with High-Efficiency Reverse Osmosis Technology, Mechanical Vapour Recompression (MVR) systems, and a Biological Oxidation and Dephenolization (BOD) Plant with Tertiary Treatment. These sophisticated processes enable the plant to treat and reuse water effectively, drastically minimising its draw from natural freshwater sources and setting a groundbreaking precedent for heavy industries.

Further demonstrating its commitment to water conservation, the Kalinganagar plant operates as a ‘Zero Effluent Discharge Plant.’ This means all water used in its extensive operations undergoes advanced treatment in Effluent Treatment Plants and is subsequently fully reused within the facility itself, ensuring that no untreated water is discharged into the environment. This closed-loop system is a critical component of sustainable industrial practices, preventing water pollution and protecting local aquatic ecosystems, which is paramount for the health and well-being of surrounding communities.

In addition to its advanced water recycling efforts, the plant has developed a substantial ‘Rainwater Harvesting-cum-Percolation Pond’ spanning 10,500 square meters. This structure boasts a storage capacity of 46,000 cubic meters and is complemented by over 10,000 square meters of green cover. The pond plays a vital role in channelling precious rainwater to percolate down, thereby replenishing underground water tables. Such initiatives are crucial for enhancing regional water security, especially in areas prone to water stress, and contribute significantly to the ecological balance of the industrial zone and its environs.

Beyond water management, Tata Steel Kalinganagar has also embraced renewable energy, commissioning a 10.1 MWp floating solar power project on its reservoir.
