NTPC Limited, India’s largest power utility, and Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL), the corporate entity of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP), have formalised a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the supply of limestone.
The strategic agreement, signed on April 25, underscores a collaborative effort to bolster the supply chain ecosystem and drive synergies between key players in the power and steel industries. Under the terms of the MoU, RINL will supply 9 lakh metric tonnes of limestone, specifically lime chips, a by-product of its operations, to NTPC units across the country over a duration of five years. Limestone serves as a crucial raw material for the flue-gas desulphurisation (FGD) systems being installed at NTPC’s coal-based thermal plants, aimed at mitigating sulphur dioxide emissions and enhancing environmental sustainability. This strategic partnership between NTPC and RINL aligns with the shared objectives of fostering resource efficiency and promoting eco-friendly practices in the energy sector.
The MoU signing ceremony, attended by key executives from both organisations, including Surinder Pal Singh Virk, Chief General Manager (Corporate Centre-Fuel Management) of NTPC, and Rajat Aich, General Manager (Marketing) of RINL, marks a pivotal milestone in the collaborative journey towards sustainable energy production. The presence of senior leadership figures such as S.K. Sinha, Head of NTPC Simhadri, and D.K. Mohanty, Director (Commercial) of RINL-VSP, underscores the strategic significance of the partnership and the commitment of both entities to drive operational excellence and innovation in the energy domain.
By leveraging RINL’s expertise in limestone production and NTPC’s operational capabilities in power generation, the MoU paves the way for a mutually beneficial collaboration that not only addresses the immediate operational needs of NTPC’s thermal plants but also fosters long-term sustainability and resilience in the energy value chain. As India embarks on a path towards cleaner and greener energy solutions, strategic partnerships like the one forged between NTPC and RINL serve as catalysts for driving positive change and advancing the nation’s energy transition agenda.
