NTPC Launches 1.2 GW Solar Module Tender To Boost Khavda Capacity

Khavda Renewable Energy Park is set for another major capacity addition with NTPC Renewable Energy Ltd floating a tender for 1.2 gigawatts of solar modules, marking one of the largest module procurement calls in the country’s green energy landscape.

The state-run power producer has invited bids for the supply of crystalline bifacial photovoltaic modules for the 1,200 MW project at Khavda South Block, located in the Rann of Kutch. The bidding process will remain open until 28 August 2025. According to officials, the scope of the tender covers the manufacturing, supply, packing, forwarding, and transportation of modules with a minimum capacity of 570 Wp. These modules must fall under the “open category” of the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM), ensuring adherence to the government’s quality and performance standards. The winning bidder will supply a total of 1,560 MWp of modules, along with an additional one per cent inventory earmarked as spares.

Industry experts highlighted that the Khavda project is part of India’s broader ambition to scale renewable energy capacity in pursuit of its 2030 target of 500 GW of clean power. NTPC REL has indicated that the financing for the project will be met through a mix of internal accruals and external borrowings, signalling strong institutional support for large-scale green infrastructure. Financial eligibility has also been clearly outlined. Bidders are required to demonstrate an average annual turnover of at least Rs 2.47 million per megawatt peak of quoted capacity over the three preceding financial years. This ensures that only financially robust players will be in contention, adding credibility to the execution process.

The Khavda site has been a focal point of India’s renewable buildout. Recent contracts awarded in the region have already seen leading manufacturers secure significant orders, including large-scale module supplies under tracker-mounted bifacial technology. This tender, however, is expected to attract both domestic and international suppliers eyeing a foothold in India’s rapidly expanding solar manufacturing ecosystem. Energy sector analysts note that the scale of the Khavda park underlines the government’s strategy of creating renewable energy zones capable of delivering economies of scale and streamlined transmission. With NTPC, the country’s largest power utility, leading the charge, the project also underscores the gradual but firm pivot away from fossil fuels.

While challenges such as supply chain constraints and volatility in raw material prices remain, industry insiders maintain that the Khavda initiative reflects resilience in India’s renewable growth path. For Gujarat, the development promises to further cement its role as a hub for clean energy investments, creating both employment opportunities and long-term sustainability dividends. If executed on time, the Khavda solar park will stand among the largest operational renewable energy clusters globally, reaffirming India’s credibility as a driver of the global energy transition.
