The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), which operates across the northeastern states of India, as well as parts of West Bengal and Bihar, continues its efforts to enhance safety measures and improve train travel security. According to NFR Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, the railway zone has been consistently upgrading its infrastructure with advanced safety technologies.
In November, NFR installed Thick Web Switch Point machines with clamp-type locking at 31 stations, further bolstering the safety of the network. Additionally, the railway has focused on upgrading and replacing components of its signalling system in several sections, ensuring smoother and more secure train operations. To enhance safety at level crossings, NFR introduced sliding boom gates at four level crossing gates at Katihar, one at Alipurduar, and two at Lumding division. Electric lifting barriers were also replaced at level crossings in Katihar and Tinsukia divisions, significantly improving safety measures at these critical points. In terms of fire safety, automatic fire detection and alarm systems were installed at Rahamatpur and Arariya Court stations in Katihar division. These systems are part of a broader initiative to prevent damage to railway property and improve overall station safety.
The NFR has also replaced 381 signalling batteries across its five divisions, ensuring better reliability of its safety systems. In addition, modern communication systems are being utilized to provide real-time visual information to train operators, aiding in the smooth control of train movements. Sharma emphasized that infrastructural upgrades are crucial to the safe operation of trains. The reliability and maintenance of these safety gears directly impact the capacity of the railway system. With these advancements, NFR aims to offer a superior, punctual, and safer railway experience for passengers, ensuring the continued safety and efficiency of the railway network in the region.
