The North-Eastern states of India are currently facing severe challenges due to relentless rainfall and subsequent flooding, with several rivers exceeding danger levels. Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Manipur, and Mizoram remain on high alert as they struggle with the aftermath of the downpours. The flood situation in Assam has significantly deteriorated, affecting 1.134 million people across 28 districts. The death toll in the state has now reached 38, with two fatalities reported in Tinsukia district on Tuesday. Rescue operations have been intensified, with the Indian Air Force (IAF) deploying helicopters to airlift 12 fishermen stranded on a riverine island in Dibrugarh since Friday.
The unprecedented flooding has led to the requisition of IAF helicopters for rescue missions, as boats have been rendered ineffective by the surging water levels. The stranded fishermen were located on Hatia Ali, an island in the middle of the Brahmaputra River. In Mizoram, the situation worsened on Tuesday when heavy rainfall triggered landslides in Aizawl, resulting in the tragic deaths of three family members. The landslides have added to the region’s woes, compounding the impact of the floods. In Manipur, major rivers including the Imphal, Thoubal, and Iril have surged above danger levels. The state government has responded by declaring a two-day holiday for educational institutions. This marks the second significant flood event in Manipur within a month. One fatality and one missing person have been reported in Senapati district.
Arunachal Pradesh is also experiencing severe flooding, with the majority of its rivers and tributaries exceeding danger levels. The ongoing situation demands urgent attention from disaster management authorities, as the relentless rains continue to batter the region. The persistent rainfall and resulting floods have highlighted the vulnerability of the North-Eastern states to such natural calamities. The annual monsoon season often brings significant rainfall to the region, but the intensity and frequency of these events appear to be increasing, posing severe risks to life and property. The current crisis underscores the need for enhanced disaster preparedness and resilient infrastructure in the North-East. Effective flood management strategies, early warning systems, and robust evacuation plans are essential to mitigate the impact of such natural disasters. Additionally, long-term measures to address climate change and its effects on weather patterns are crucial to safeguarding the region’s future. As the North-Eastern states navigate this challenging period, the cooperation between state and central agencies, along with the support of the armed forces, remains vital in ensuring the safety and well-being of affected communities. The resilience and solidarity of the people in these states will be instrumental in overcoming the adversities posed by the floods.
