Nokia is developing a ground-breaking smart street pole as part of the LuxTurrim5G project in Finland. These technologically advanced light poles incorporate sensors, cameras and 5G emitters to revolutionise urban infrastructure. While the smart poles may not be visually appealing, they offer cost-effective solutions and enable 5G digital services to monitor air quality, enhance road safety, and improve transport efficiency.
The LuxTurrim5G project, driven by Nokia Bell Labs, aims to create a comprehensive ecosystem that integrates antennas, base stations, sensors, screens and other devices into smart poles, enabling seamless browsing, navigation and public safety enhancements.
Currently being tested at Nokia’s Espoo campus, these innovative poles are set to redefine smart city services by providing a range of benefits, including public safety, energy efficiency, and improved public transportation. Integrating 5G technology into the smart poles will enable faster and more reliable browsing experiences and convenient access to navigation apps regardless of location. Moreover, the inclusion of cameras in these poles will act as a deterrent to potential wrongdoers and contribute to improved security.
Although still in the nascent stage and limited to Finland’s testing environment, smart poles have the potential to address traffic-related challenges faced by countries like India, characterised by heavy traffic congestion. By utilising the capabilities of smart poles, authorities can effectively identify and apprehend traffic violators, enhancing overall traffic management and safety.
