Noida to Launch 500 Electric Buses for Green Commute

Greater Noida, and the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) are collaborating to introduce a fleet of 500 electric buses across Gautam Budh Nagar.

This initiative aims to enhance public transportation, reduce carbon emissions, and provide efficient connectivity, including to the upcoming Noida International Airport. The three authorities are forming a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) to manage the operations of this electric bus service. Noida Authority will hold a 48% stake, while Greater Noida and YEIDA will each contribute 26%. The SPV will oversee the procurement, operation, and maintenance of the buses, ensuring seamless service across the region.

The electric bus fleet will consist of 250 standard-floor 12-metre buses and 250 standard-floor 9-metre buses. These buses are expected to operate on 25 routes, with services running every 10 to 15 minutes from 6:30 AM to 11:00 PM daily. The routes will include 15 in Noida, seven in Greater Noida, and three in the YEIDA area, providing comprehensive coverage and improved last-mile connectivity. To manage the operations, the SPV will engage a private operator under a 12-year Gross Cost Contract (GCC) model. Under this arrangement, the operator will be compensated based on a fixed cost per kilometre, while the SPV will handle fare collection and revenue management. This model aims to ensure efficiency and accountability in service delivery.

The total project cost is estimated at ₹675 crore. Initial operations will commence from terminals located in Sector 82 and Sector 91, with plans to establish additional depots in Greater Noida and the YEIDA region within a year. Each bus is projected to run approximately 72,000 kilometres annually, contributing significantly to the region’s public transport capacity. This initiative aligns with broader efforts to enhance connectivity to the Noida International Airport, which is currently under development. The introduction of electric buses is expected to facilitate smoother transit for passengers and reduce reliance on private vehicles, thereby contributing to environmental sustainability and reduced traffic congestion.

The project also reflects a commitment to adopting eco-friendly technologies and promoting equitable access to public transportation. By integrating electric buses into the urban transport network, the authorities aim to create a more inclusive and environmentally responsible mobility solution for residents and visitors alike.
