Noida Authority is moving forward with a road widening project between Sector 95 and the DND Flyway. The bottleneck, located adjacent to the Rashtriya Dalit Prerna Sthal, has long frustrated commuters due to abrupt lane reductions that routinely trigger gridlocks during peak hours. Following extensive surveys and a detailed traffic study, the Authority has greenlit a plan to create a new 5.5-metre-wide carriageway along this vital stretch.
The proposed expansion will be achieved by removing existing infrastructure that includes a one-metre-wide side paver, a 1.4-metre-wide footpath, and a 3.1-metre-wide paved surface. The redesign is expected to harmonise traffic flow by preserving lane continuity, reducing wait times, and enhancing vehicular movement across this corridor that connects key sectors, expressways, and arterial loops. Officials confirmed that the plan received its final nod from a state-level oversight committee on June 5, 2025. The no-objection certificate (NOC) was a critical milestone, granted by the Lucknow-based panel tasked with regulating modifications around culturally and historically significant public assets, such as memorials, museums, and parks across Uttar Pradesh. With the NOC secured, the Authority is poised to commence the tendering process for construction in the coming weeks.
For years, the stretch near the Rashtriya Dalit Prerna Sthal has been a known bottleneck, where multiple high-volume traffic sources converge — including the Sector 62–18 Elevated Road, Sector 18 commercial hub, Film City Flyover Loop, and the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway. The road suddenly narrows from four lanes to three in front of the memorial, creating a structural choke point. The daily slowdown has frequently required increased traffic police deployment, manual barricading, and reactive diversions to manage the congestion. A senior traffic planning official said that temporary stop-and-go measures were recently implemented near the Film City loop to prevent rear-end collisions and bottlenecks. However, these solutions proved counterproductive by redirecting the traffic snarl backwards onto the elevated loop itself. The upcoming expansion, according to transport experts, will provide a long-term remedy by eliminating forced lane drops and improving the corridor’s throughput efficiency.
Urban mobility planners have praised the Authority’s decision to act on structural issues rather than rely on ad hoc policing interventions. The proposed road widening is expected not only to resolve congestion but also to enhance emergency access, reduce fuel consumption from idling vehicles, and contribute to better air quality — aligning with the city’s larger sustainability goals. Officials associated with the infrastructure wing of the Authority stated that the widening blueprint mirrors the strategy adopted in a recently completed stretch between the DND Flyway loop and Film City along the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway. In that instance, an extra lane was added to smooth out similar lane mismatches, which had previously led to frequent snarls near a major flyover exit. The success of that project reportedly influenced the decision to replicate the solution at the Dalit Memorial stretch.
With the area being a sensitive public landmark, a multi-agency approval process was essential before initiating any physical changes to the landscape. The environmental footprint of the expansion will be minimised by retaining existing green zones and relocating essential street furniture where feasible, according to Authority engineers. Furthermore, the proposed design includes pedestrian continuity measures to ensure safe access to the memorial and adjacent sectors. Experts have highlighted that traffic volumes in the vicinity have surged in recent years due to rapid urbanisation, commercial growth, and increased tourist footfall at nearby public landmarks. The demand for improved road infrastructure has been echoed in multiple transport assessments and citizen feedback reports submitted over the last five years.
The Noida Authority is also expected to implement smart mobility features, including synchronised traffic signals and real-time monitoring at the expanded section, as part of its integrated traffic management system (ITMS). These digital interventions are likely to be rolled out in phases alongside the physical upgrade, enhancing the overall commuter experience. While the project awaits final approval from the Authority’s governing board, the preparatory groundwork has already begun. Officials hinted that land availability will not pose a major hurdle as the expansion is being planned within existing right-of-way limits, eliminating the need for significant land acquisition or displacement. However, minor encroachments and utility shifts may still be required, and detailed planning will ensure minimal disruption to daily commuter flow during construction.
With the nod secured and civic consensus in place, the road widening initiative is set to transform a high-stress commuter corridor into a more streamlined, accessible, and sustainable urban passage. As cities like Noida grapple with the dual challenge of rising population density and mobility inefficiencies, infrastructure upgrades such as this carry larger implications for how Indian cities approach urban planning and public space management in the coming decades. The initiative reinforces Noida’s position as a forward-facing city actively pursuing structural solutions to improve urban liveability and commuter convenience while respecting heritage and public sentiment.
