Noida Metro Aqua Line Extension Set to Boost Connectivity to Delhi and Noida International Airport
The Noida Metro Rail Corporation (NMRC) has commenced a crucial topography survey for the proposed 11.6-kilometre extension of the Aqua Line from Botanical Garden to Sector 142. This development is set to improve connectivity within Noida and offer a more efficient travel route to the upcoming Noida International Airport in Jewar. The extension, which will pass along the Noida Expressway, aims to connect the Aqua Line to two major branches of the Delhi Metro: the Blue and Magenta lines. Once completed, this corridor will significantly reduce travel time for residents of Greater Noida and sectors along the Noida Expressway, with the added benefit of seamless access to the airport.
The survey, initiated on February 16, is an essential step in preparing for the construction of the corridor. It will map out the elevation of buildings, roads, and other structures along the proposed route, allowing planners to determine the best alignment for the metro. This work is expected to take a few weeks to complete, after which final preparations for construction can begin. The 11.6 km corridor will include eight new stations along its elevated route. These stations will be located in key areas such as Sector 96, Sector 44, Sector 105, Sector 93, and areas near Noida’s future developments. Notably, the route will facilitate a direct connection to the Noida International Airport, reducing the time it takes to travel between Noida and the airport, which is approximately 40 km away.
This development comes at a time when the Noida airport is preparing to welcome its first flights in April 2025, which is why NMRC is moving swiftly to finalise all necessary processes. The project is estimated to cost Rs 2,254.35 crore and will be funded by the central government’s Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) in collaboration with the Noida Authority. Lokesh M, CEO of Noida, expressed the excitement surrounding the project: “This extension will offer a much-needed boost to commuters travelling to Delhi, making their journey quicker and more comfortable. We are confident that once completed, the Aqua Line extension will reduce the pressure on existing transport routes and provide direct access to the airport.”
The extension also promises to serve up to 70,000 daily passengers. With passengers currently needing to switch between different metro lines, this new route will provide a direct link to the Magenta and Blue lines at the Botanical Garden. The introduction of new stations, such as those near the Noida Authority office and the police commissioner’s office, is also expected to enhance local connectivity for residents. While awaiting the final approval from the central government, which could come soon, this metro extension project is anticipated to dramatically transform the travel landscape in Noida, making it easier for residents to access not only the city but also major transport hubs. This development aligns with the city’s ongoing efforts to expand and modernise its public transport infrastructure in anticipation of future growth. As Noida continues to experience rapid urbanisation, the Aqua Line extension stands as a vital infrastructure project, linking the city more closely to the rest of the National Capital Region (NCR).
