Noida International Airport is gearing up for its inaugural commercial flight operations, scheduled to commence on April 17, 2025. This highly anticipated development marks a significant milestone for the Delhi-NCR region, as it aims to alleviate congestion at existing airports and enhance connectivity for millions of passengers.
The announcement was made during a high-level meeting convened by Noida International Airport Ltd (NIAL), the government’s special purpose vehicle overseeing the project. Arun Vir Singh, CEO of NIAL, expressed confidence in the timeline presented by Yamuna International Airport Ltd (YIAPL), a subsidiary of Zurich AG. However, he also acknowledged the challenges of adhering to the April 17 deadline, noting that any delays could push international approvals back by up to six months. Originally, the airport was slated to begin operations by September 2023, with plans to handle up to 65 daily flights—62 domestic and two international, plus one cargo flight. While Singh indicated that this number is unlikely to change in the immediate future, discussions are already underway with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) for route approvals.
Public sentiment surrounding the new airport is a mix of excitement and impatience. Singh reassured stakeholders that at least one international flight would depart on the airport’s opening day, underscoring the importance of a successful launch. Singh emphasised that partner airlines, including IndiGo and Akasa Air, will participate in these trials to ensure runway readiness and validate operational systems.

The DGCA has already inspected various calibrations, and tests for the instrument landing system (ILS) are scheduled for October 4-6. The aerodrome licence application is expected to be submitted in December, with approval anticipated by mid-March. This airport, spanning 1,334 hectares in Jewar, is designed to accommodate up to 12 million passengers annually in its first phase. Future expansions are planned, potentially transforming the region into a major aviation hub. From a sustainability perspective, the new airport aims to incorporate eco-friendly technologies and practices in its operations. This could include efficient energy management systems, waste reduction initiatives, and promoting public transport access to reduce carbon footprints.
