Noida Expressway Set for Major Safety Upgrade

The Noida Authority has announced a comprehensive ₹8 crore upgrade of the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway.

This 24-kilometre arterial route, vital for connecting Delhi, Noida, Greater Noida, and the Yamuna Expressway, is set to undergo critical enhancements aimed at improving night visibility and overall road safety. The expressway, with 20 kilometres under the jurisdiction of the Noida Authority and the remaining 4 kilometres managed by the Greater Noida Authority, will see the installation of solar-powered reflectors, updated signage, and thermoplastic lane markings. These measures are designed to address the rising number of accidents attributed to poor lighting and inadequate road indicators.

The initiative follows a detailed traffic audit conducted by the Regional Centre for Urban and Environmental Studies (RCUES), which identified several deficiencies in the current infrastructure. The audit revealed that many lane dividers, cat-eye reflectors, and direction markers were either faded or missing, posing significant risks to motorists, especially during nighttime travel. In response to these findings, the Noida Authority has issued a tender for the proposed upgrades, with applications open until May 15. The project will commence from Sector 14A and extend across the entire expressway.

Key components of the upgrade include the replacement of outdated road signage with updated boards and the installation of solar-powered reflectors to aid visibility at night. Thermoplastic paint will be used for long-lasting lane markings, and exit points will receive rumble strips and speed limit indicators to reduce speeding risks. The infrastructure enhancements will adhere to Indian Road Congress (IRC) standards, ensuring clearly visible lane separation, defined access points, and improved traffic guidance systems. These upgrades aim not only to prevent further accidents but also to streamline vehicular movement along this crucial expressway.

Additionally, the expressway’s existing 13-foot overbridges and approximately 20 public sanitation units will receive improved signage for easier location access, particularly important during low-light travel. While no structural modifications are planned for these facilities, the enhanced signage will aid commuters in locating them more efficiently. The Noida-Greater Noida Expressway serves as a critical link between major urban centres and is poised to become even more significant with the upcoming Noida International Airport in Jewar. The planned safety upgrades are a proactive step towards accommodating increased traffic and ensuring the well-being of daily commuters.

By integrating sustainable technologies such as solar-powered reflectors and adhering to established safety standards, the Noida Authority demonstrates a commitment to creating safer, more efficient, and environmentally friendly urban infrastructure. These improvements are expected to set a precedent for similar initiatives across the region, contributing to the broader goal of developing zero net carbon, eco-friendly, and equitable cities. As the project progresses, continuous monitoring and community engagement will be essential to ensure that the upgrades effectively address the identified issues and meet the evolving needs of the city’s residents and commuters.
