NMMC to Safeguard Nerul Trees by Removing Concrete Enclosures
Navi Mumbai: A growing environmental concern has emerged in Sector 6, Nerul, after residents discovered that three mature palm trees had their roots encased in concrete. These trees, located along the footpath, were previously able to access air and water through open root spaces. However, the sudden covering of the roots with cement has left the trees with no breathing space, raising concerns about their survival.
“Until recently, the roots were exposed, allowing the trees to receive the necessary air and water for nourishment. Now, the entire base is covered with cement, and we’re unsure who is responsible for this destructive act,” said a worried resident of the area. With the trees facing a risk of dehydration and drying up due to the lack of essential resources, residents quickly alerted the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC). One of the residents took to social media to highlight the issue, calling for immediate intervention. “These are established trees that have been standing here for years. They are an integral part of the local environment, and their health must be protected. We urge the NMMC to investigate and take action against whoever is responsible for this,” the resident added.
Responding to the complaints, the Garden Department of NMMC assured the public that action would be taken to resolve the matter. Deputy Municipal Commissioner Kisanrao Palande confirmed that the concrete surrounding the roots of the Nerul palm trees would be removed to ensure their survival. “This is not the first time we’ve encountered such an issue. A similar situation was reported in Vashi, where trees had been cemented over. We intervened there, and we will do the same here. It’s commendable that residents are staying vigilant and bringing such concerns to the administration’s attention,” said Palande. With the NMMC’s commitment to addressing the issue, the future of the affected palm trees in Nerul now appears more secure. The timely intervention is crucial in safeguarding the environment and the well-being of these valuable trees.
