Niti Aayog has unveiled a comprehensive plan aimed at transforming the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) into a global hub of excellence. This ambitious blueprint, presented to Maharashtra’s top leadership, including Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Ministers Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar, outlines a multifaceted approach to elevate the region’s status on the global stage.
Niti Aayog’s vision is expansive, focusing on several critical areas that promise to reshape Mumbai into a world-class city. The think tank’s strategy emphasises the development of international-standard infrastructure, positioning Mumbai as a hub for world-class services. This includes the promotion of affordable housing to address the city’s chronic housing challenges and leveraging Mumbai’s untapped tourism potential to establish it as a global tourism centre.
A key element of the proposal Is the integrated development of Mumbai’s ports, which is envisioned to create a robust industrial and logistics hub. This development is expected to attract significant investment, thereby boosting the region’s economic growth and enhancing its global competitiveness. The plan also highlights the necessity of developing sustainable and inclusive urban infrastructure, which would cater to the diverse needs of Mumbai’s growing population. A crucial aspect of Niti Aayog’s proposal is the expedited development of the Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT) land. Recognising the challenges posed by existing policies, the Maharashtra state government has requested the central government to consider policy adjustments. These changes would facilitate the redevelopment of land owned by MbPT, as well as other key parcels held by the defence, railways, and salt pan commissioners.
