The National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) is set to commence operations of the Subansiri Lower Hydro Electric Project, which is the largest under-construction hydel project in the country, in June. The mega dam, located at Gerukamukh on the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border, will have a capacity of 2,000 MW and the first two units of 250 MW each will start functioning in June, while the remaining six units are expected to be operational by June 2022. The construction progress of the project was impacted by floods and landslides last year, which caused a delay of three months in the commissioning of the first two units.
Upon completion, the state of Arunachal Pradesh will receive a 12 percent share of free power from the project, amounting to 240 MW. The project is expected to generate revenue of nearly Rs 440 crore annually for the state exchequer. The project will provide a significant boost to the local economy and create job opportunities in the region.
