NHPC Sets 28.67 Crore for CSR Projects in Jammu and Kashmir

The National Hydroelectric Power Corporation’s (NHPC) commitment to the socio-economic upliftment of regions it operates in, the company has allocated ₹28.67 crore for Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities in Jammu and Kashmir for the financial year 2024-25. This substantial allocation is part of NHPC’s larger pan-India CSR initiative of ₹167.93 crore, which will be distributed across various regions where the company is involved. The Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir made this announcement on March 24, 2025, during a session in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly. This funding will primarily target key areas such as health and sanitation, education and skill development, rural development, disaster management, and sports.

These sectors are crucial for improving the quality of life for local communities, particularly in areas that face challenges like natural disasters, inadequate infrastructure, and limited access to essential services. The allocation of ₹28.67 crore is a clear indication of NHPC’s growing role in driving sustainable development in J&K. The company’s CSR efforts aim to address pressing regional needs, with an emphasis on long-term, impactful solutions. In particular, the funding for health and sanitation is expected to significantly enhance public health infrastructure and reduce preventable diseases, which are particularly rampant in rural areas. Similarly, education and skill development initiatives are expected to equip the region’s youth with the necessary skills to tap into employment opportunities, thereby fostering socio-economic mobility.Further, the emphasis on rural development and disaster management highlights NHPC’s role in building resilience in a state that faces frequent natural calamities like floods and landslides. By investing in disaster preparedness and recovery systems, NHPC aims to safeguard vulnerable communities and provide rapid responses to natural emergencies.

While the financial commitment is noteworthy, the Chief Minister underscored the importance of consulting local representatives in the planning and implementation of CSR projects. Responding to queries from a member of the Legislative Assembly, the Chief Minister said that the NHPC should work more closely with local MLAs to ensure that the projects reflect the needs of the communities and that the funds are allocated in the most effective manner. This approach, which advocates for local stakeholder engagement, is seen as a positive step towards fostering transparency and ensuring that the benefits of CSR projects reach the grassroots. The need for such consultations has been a topic of discussion for several years. Local elected officials have stressed the importance of direct involvement in identifying priority areas for CSR initiatives, which would ensure that resources are allocated effectively. In line with this, the Chief Minister confirmed that NHPC would be urged to hold consultations with MLAs to ensure the projects meet the specific needs of their constituencies. The CSR funding also reflects the company’s broader strategy of creating sustainable and equitable communities. With a focus on long-term impact, NHPC aims to ensure that these initiatives foster socio-economic development, improve livelihoods, and contribute to environmental sustainability.

With the ₹28.67 crore allocated to Jammu and Kashmir, NHPC continues to play a pivotal role in the region’s development, complementing government efforts to ensure a more resilient, prosperous, and inclusive society. The ongoing projects will have a ripple effect, not only improving the quality of life for residents but also contributing to the state’s overall growth trajectory.
