The nation’s premier hydroelectric power company, and Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), a leading energy major, have forged a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This pivotal collaboration aims to develop pumped storage hydropower projects and other renewable energy initiatives, including green hydrogen. The alliance underscores a robust commitment to enhancing grid stability, reducing carbon footprints, and fostering sustainable, eco-friendly urban and industrial ecosystems across the country.
The signing of this MoU between two public sector giants from distinct energy sectors—hydroelectric power generation and oil refining—marks a crucial synergy. R.P. Goyal, Chairman and Managing Director of NHPC, and Sujoy Choudhury, Director (Planning & Business Development) of IOCL, formalised this pact, signalling a unified approach to addressing India’s evolving energy landscape. This strategic collaboration is designed to leverage NHPC’s expertise in large-scale hydro projects and IOCL’s ambitious diversification into green energy, creating a powerful impetus for decarbonisation efforts and energy independence.
A cornerstone of this partnership is the focus on pumped storage hydropower projects. As India rapidly integrates intermittent renewable energy sources like solar and wind into its grid, reliable energy storage solutions become paramount for maintaining grid stability and ensuring a consistent power supply. Pumped storage, with its ability to store surplus renewable energy and release it during peak demand, offers a robust and proven mechanism for grid balancing and providing peaking power. This technology is critical for enabling higher penetration of renewables, thereby accelerating the transition away from fossil fuels and contributing directly to a zero net carbon future for India’s cities and industrial centres.
Indian Oil Corporation Limited, traditionally a fossil fuel behemoth, is actively diversifying its portfolio with ambitious green energy targets, including a goal of achieving 35 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030. Furthermore, IOCL is making significant strides in green hydrogen production, a clean fuel vital for decarbonising hard-to-abate sectors. This collaboration with NHPC provides IOCL with a strategic pathway to integrate large-scale renewable energy and storage solutions into its operations, supporting its transition towards a more sustainable energy future. The synergy between hydro power and green hydrogen production offers a comprehensive approach to clean energy.
NHPC, as India’s largest hydroelectric power company, brings extensive experience and a robust development pipeline to this partnership. The corporation is currently developing 13 projects with a combined capacity of 10,927 MW, has 7 projects (5,979 MW) under construction, and 3 projects (2,430 MW) under bidding. Additionally, 10 projects totalling 7,854 MW are under various stages of survey and investigation. This vast portfolio of hydro projects, inherently a clean energy source, positions NHPC as a critical enabler for India’s energy transition, providing stable and reliable power that complements intermittent renewables.
