The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has harnessed the power of artificial intelligence (AI) and drones to identify around 1,000 encroachments on four key national highways. This cutting-edge technology is helping NHAI overcome significant hurdles in completing vital road construction projects by pinpointing obstacles that are obstructing progress.

The operation was carried out over a span of approximately 360 kilometres, covering four major stretches of national highways, using high-frequency drones that provide detailed aerial views of the roads. The technology involved in the survey employs AI algorithms to detect potential encroachments, which range from parked vehicles and construction materials to makeshift structures along the highways. NHAI officials are now collaborating with local authorities to clear these obstructions and pave the way for the completion of critical infrastructure projects. According to Sumesh Banzal, Project Director for NHAI’s Indore division, the aerial survey conducted with drones identified a significant number of encroachments across different stretches of the national highways. Specifically, the Indore-Dewas section of NH 52 revealed 47 encroachments, while the Indore-Gujarat stretch of NH 47 reported 448 encroachments.

In addition, the Indore-Khalghat section of NH 52 saw 480 encroachments, and the Indore-Maharashtra section of NH 52 had 15 encroachments. These figures highlight the challenges faced by NHAI in progressing with construction work and the importance of addressing these issues promptly. The use of drones for this type of survey is an innovative solution that greatly enhances the speed and accuracy of identifying encroachments. During the survey, the drone operates from a car that moves along the highway while the high-frequency drone flies overhead, capturing images and identifying objects that may be deemed as encroachments. While drones can effectively detect parked vehicles, temporary structures, and dumped construction materials, they may not be able to distinguish between actual encroachments and harmless objects. As such, NHAI officials have emphasised the need for a subsequent physical survey to verify the data and ensure that only genuine encroachments are flagged for removal.

This advanced surveying technique is particularly useful for large-scale infrastructure projects, where road construction often faces delays due to encroachments and other obstacles. By leveraging AI, NHAI can not only identify these barriers more efficiently but also gain valuable insights into the extent of the encroachment problem across different regions. Following the identification of these encroachments, NHAI has approached the local administrations of the concerned districts to assist in clearing the identified obstructions. Collaboration between NHAI and local authorities is critical to ensuring that the removal process is carried out swiftly and effectively, allowing the roadworks to proceed without further delays.
