The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is set to construct a multi-level flyover in Panjappur, Trichy, aiming to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance connectivity along the Trichy-Madurai National Highway.
This project is part of a broader initiative to improve urban infrastructure in the region. The proposed flyover, approximately 3 km in length, will span from the Koraiyar River bridge to Vinayaga Nagar. Designed to be the longest flyover on a national highway passing through Trichy city, it will facilitate uninterrupted vehicular movement, particularly benefiting vehicles traveling towards Madurai and Chennai. The project is estimated to cost Rs 331 crore, fully funded by NHAI. Construction is expected to commence by April 2024, with an 18-month completion timeline .
In addition to the main flyover, a shorter 750-meter flyover is planned on the Thanjavur-Karur Semi-ring Road, intersecting the Trichy-Madurai NH at Panjappur. These dual-level flyovers aim to segregate local and through traffic, reducing bottlenecks and enhancing safety. The design includes eight-lane carriageways and two pedestrian subways to ensure seamless access to the upcoming Integrated Bus Terminus (IBT) and other commercial facilities . The IBT, currently under construction on a 115.68-acre site at Panjappur, is expected to be operational by June 3, 2025 .
This state-of-the-art facility will serve as a central hub for long-distance and city buses, alleviating congestion at the existing Central Bus Stand. The IBT’s development is part of a comprehensive urban planning strategy that includes a truck terminal, TIDEL Park, wholesale vegetable market, and an Olympic training academy. The flyover project has been designed to integrate with these developments, ensuring smooth traffic flow and accessibility. Consultations between NHAI and the Tiruchy Corporation have led to the proposal of an elevated corridor extending 2.6 km, connecting the Koraiyar River to Senkurichi village. This corridor aims to accommodate the anticipated increase in traffic due to the IBT and other infrastructure projects .
The Panjappur flyover project underscores NHAI’s commitment to sustainable urban development. By reducing traffic congestion and enhancing connectivity, the flyover will contribute to the creation of a zero-net carbon, eco-friendly, and equitable urban environment. The integration of pedestrian facilities and the focus on seamless connectivity reflect a forward-thinking approach to urban planning.
