NHAI Plans Elevated Roads to Ease Traffic in Cities

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced its intention to construct elevated roads on highways passing through cities to reduce traffic congestion.

NHAI is investing an estimated INR 300 billion in this initiative, which includes building elevated highways on the Nashik Phata to Khed, Talegaon to Chakan, Hadapsar to Dive Ghat and Wagholi to Shirur routes. Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister of Transportation, made the announcement in Pune after carrying out an aerial survey of the Palkhi path which connects Pandharpur with Alandi and Dehu’s significant holy sites.

Gadkari emphasised that the elevated highways will address complaints of commuters who have been demanding solutions to traffic delays for a long time. “The industrial sector of Chakan will benefit from the elevated road on the Talegaon-Chakan route. The route should be completed as soon as possible by the government,” he said. He further revealed that separate detailed project reports (DPRs) are being prepared for Katraj-Dehu Road and Navale Pool areas. He noted that during construction of the Katraj-Dehu Road, there was very little urbanisation and a bypass was constructed outside of the city. However, the exponential growth of Pune city resulted in increased traffic volume on this road. As a result, NHAI is considering building an elevated road in the Navale Pool area to mitigate traffic congestion.

The elevated highway initiative is expected to enhance the development of villages suffering from drought, according to Gadkari. He said the Pune-Bengaluru highway spans around 206 km, with the highway passing through drought-stricken villages on the way to Bengaluru. The development of this highway will lead to new growth in the region, he added. NHAI’s plan to build elevated roads on highways passing through cities is expected to improve transportation and reduce traffic congestion. The initiative will also bring about significant economic and social benefits for communities living in the affected areas.
